Key Selection Parameters

Specialized and marine operating environments demand lubricants that satisfy unique environmental and chemical conditions:

  • 1
Total Base Number (TBN) Marine engines burning high-sulfur heavy fuels create corrosive sulfuric acid during combustion. TBN measures the oil's alkaline capability to neutralize these acids and prevent cylinder corrosion.
  • 2
Water Tolerance and Demulsibility Marine gearboxes and machinery operate in wet bilge and deck areas. The oil must resist foaming, rust formation, and maintain load-bearing film strength even when contaminated with water.
  • 3
Environmental Acceptability (EALs) Regulations mandate Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) for stern tubes, thrusters, and deck machinery. These must be biodegradable, non-bioaccumulative, and minimally toxic.
  • 4
Non-Phytotoxicity (for Agricultural Spray Oils) Horticultural spray oils must be highly refined to block and smother pests (scale insects, mites) on leaves while remaining completely safe (non-burning) for the plant tissue itself.

Why it Matters

Standard industrial lubricants fail rapidly under the salty, wet, and high-stress cycles of marine service. Specially formulated marine engine oils protect components from acidic corrosion, prevent ring-sticking, and handle continuous high-torque operations on long voyages.

Maintenance Tip

Routinely monitor TBN depletion and water-in-oil levels via onboard testing kits. High water content triggers severe bearing wear, while low TBN leads to rapid acidic pitting on cylinder liners and piston rings.
